Just reading about SHOT Show is more fun than any anti-gun show. Then again it isn't hard to be more fun than an empty void of an idea. As it is only a poorly thought out and badly flawed theory the best its supporters can hope for is that we only point at them and laugh. Was wandering thru sitemeter this morning trying to kill time until I get off work. I notice I've been getting some hits from all over the world, and strangely placed at that, to this post in particular. Many are due to the fact they are all searching some variation of .30-30, or Winchester 30-30. Either way none of them stay long once they arrive but at least they clicked the link. So thanks for the hits to those people in San Fran, LA, France, Italy and Mexico as well as any others I might have overlooked.

If you would stick around and leave a comment or two asking questions I might be able to answer them. I've spent the last 30 years around one or another form of the "Bambi Zapper" (as Tam would say). If I cannot answer it I can point you in the direction of another one of my fellow gun-bloggers that probably could.

Well the project I started awhile back proceeds apace, a slow pace but...

Sorry for the crappy quality, but its not that great a phone either.

So far upgrades from last time include new Novak carry rear sight. Front sight is my metal working skill and the finish is still ugly for now but the slide is getting Duracoat to finish things out anyway. Wilson checkered front strap. Last but not least a 3-slot steel compensator. More to follow.

I know some of you eschew giving firearms a name but I feel this one is deserving of one. I'm leaning toward The Zombinator any other thoughts are welcome in the comments.

Well a lot has happened since my last post. The day before I made it I met a woman, after some time I fell in love with her and her two kids. She broke up with me on Christmas day to go back to the same guy that has treated her like crap for nearly 5 years but she keeps going back. I found this out a couple days later from a mutual friend. So don't expect too much out of me for right now. I know for New Year last time I said I would try to post more but life interceded. I don't think I'll make any promises this time.

Started a little project on my RIA 1911 a couple weeks ago that I hope will work out. Considering my general time delay style of doing anything that requires more than a few seconds attention, prolly not(squirrel). Thought I had told this story awhile ago but it seems that it was one of the things I overlooked. But.

My first firearm was a Savage-Stevens model 73Y and it was a fine shooting little rifle. My dad gave it to me the Christmas after I turned 11 if I recall correctly. Well technically my first firearm was a Daisy Red Rider BB gun but as it was powered by a piston and spring to fire the little zinc balls of fun and mayhem it isn't relevant to this discussion. Anyway, after receiving said .22 I looked upon it as my duty to do everything in my power to see to it the population of squirrel, rabbit, and empty soda cans was drastically reduced in my immediate area (anything up to and including 2 sq miles). Furthermore every opportunity I could get I would drag mom or some other adult out into the woods for me to ply my trade (read: mayhem and destruction) against the invading squirrel armies. The majority of my time with that rifle though was spent on turning boxes upon boxes of little .22 shorts into smoke and noise (or at least a barely audible sharp pop and a puff of burnt powder) and reducing previously mentioned empty soda cans into so much shredded aluminium (IE. thousands of rounds and nearly as many cans). One thing I have missed over the years since, is that rifle and my ability to shoot as well as I did nearly 20 years ago. As with much in my life I seem to have issues with my genes and since about Jr High I haven't had the eyesight I used to. What with everything fuzzy at a distance much over 50 yds while I'm trying to use iron sights. I figure my days of firing off a plated .22 short with the sun at my back and watching it zing a hundred yards downrange and hit a soda can are behind me. At least without the now common scopes that are currently attached to all of my rifles. Hopefully I'll be able to recall some more details of the many adventures that little rifle and I went on to regale y'all with at a later date.

Yesterday Gov. Nixon did what most of us wouldn't expect given his history of being wishy-washy toward RKBA. He actually signed HB 294. Given it was an 11th hour signing. It was set to become law today if he took no action (45 day rule). It also passed both houses of the General Assembly by veto proof majorities. Given all that, he really didn't have too much ground to stand on.

At any rate, I thank Gov. Nixon for signing this bill rather than just ignoring it into law or forcing a veto override. Which most likely would have lead to lawsuits in the blue areas of the state that wished to say it wasn't really the law. Similar to the lawsuits that delayed our CCW law in '04.

Video of the Medal of Valor award ceremony for Missouri Officers. The reason I post this is because Sgt. Ball of the Dent Co. Sheriff's Office is a friend of mine. He was also the assistant instructor at my CCW class. He told me and several others about the ceremony and the story behind his receipt of the medal not long ago and I've been looking for some footage ever since. I couldn't be more proud of him and the other officers on that stage. Some of them have truly harrowing stories they shared with him.

The new Coco Bolo, Double Diamonds I bought for my Taurus. Out of the box fit for ambi-safety. Though mine did require a bit of material removal to fit the thickness of the right side lever's tab. Easily done with a sharp pocket knife in about 2 minutes. Could have been a tad bigger for coverage of the grip frame. But. They do make a comfortable and solid grip for me. Now I just need to go out and get a bit of gunshot residue on em.

Got tagged by Snarky for the 7 things people might not know about you meme/Stylish Blogger Award. Rules are simple, tell the world 7 things people might not know about you and then tag 15 more bloggers, well that part will be difficult since almost everyone of the bloggers I can think of off the top of my head have already been tagged. Most of mine is boring old High School stuff. Anyway here goes.

1. I played football my Sr. year of High School, ended up developing a hernia that just about a year later got me medically discharged from the Army. Pretty much as soon as I showed up to the Reception Bn. go figure?!

2. I nearly didn't graduate HS on time. I failed my first semester of English III and being my Sr. year and one of the last of the required credits I needed to graduate. I had to pay to take a correspondence course in order to get that half credit on the books. The reason/my excuse: the first semester was dedicated to my most "meh" parts of the study of the English language, first quarter - sentence structure/outlining/study thereof and second quarter - poetry and the breakdown and study thereof.
In my defense I'll say this, I'm a blunt kind of guy most of the time. If I said it then I meant it, nothing between the lines and no further study is typically needed. Therefore I don't study the stuff myself, the end, full stop.

3. I never studied a lot in school, I just winged it most of the time, my only problem is that grades were based more on homework than tests...I still tested in the top 10% of the nation on nearly all my achievement tests(which I found to be ridiculously easy) from upper elementary forward. That also had drawbacks in that the next set of teachers would look at those scores and automatically expect me to like homework or something. The fools. Just because I'm a nerd doesn't make me that kind of nerd. Not all nerds are created equal.

4. Things people can say to me that will undeniably piss me off - call me stupid or insult my family. You can insult me all-day-long and get into neither of those two categories and you'll get a smile. Delve into that deep end of the pool and...well, did I mention that I can hold a grudge like no one else? Never forget that society will prolly collapse one day and the rules of such go out the window. Have a Nice Apocalypse!

5. Getting to that last item. IQ: 129, tested once. Maybe higher or lower now but that was about a decade ago. Not as smart as some, not nearly as stupid as others and there are a lot of subjects that completely leave me stumped. As the saying goes though: "Rocket science isn't even rocket science."

6. I'm a big teddy bear, seriously...stop laughing! My idea of a date is cuddled up on a couch with my date, a movie and a pizza. Hopefully she likes to cuddle,... and pizza. Other than that, shooting range here we come, and she can just cuddle up to my armory. Either one I find sexy, both is even better.... Ok, so I'm a big redneck teddy bear, sue me.

7. I am only about a credit or two shy of being a certified precision machinist. Took some of those elective credits I had saved up by the time Jr. and Sr. years rolled around and took a Vo-Tech course the first half of the day for those last 2 years. That class also gave me another subject I dislike...Trigonometry: Math's version of a rattlesnake, screw with it and it'll bite you.

That about wraps it up, as I said, I won't tag anyone cause most everyone I know already did it or they don't seem the type to waste pixels. If you want to do it and blame me, be my guest.

Well, that sums up my day today, with 4:30 PM rapidly approaching (about the time I trundle back off to the saltmines) it looks like I'll be a tired boy tonight at work.

That said, I'll explain for those that don't already know. I work over the weekend, nights to be specific, and thru the week when I'm off I try to maintain that pattern. I usually end up screwing that up by Thursday and this week was no different. In spite of the fact that when I was on day-shift I could keep that up all week with no problem (I'm a night-owl till I need to be, go figure.) Anyway, slept about 2 hours yesterday morning, stayed awake till about 6:00PM and then took a bit longer nap than I intended and awoke at 10:00PM rather well rested. So it'll be right at a 27 hour day for me by the time I crawl back into bed sometime after 5:00AM tomorrow morning. Even though I'll be getting heavy-eyed around 8:00 tonight.

Yay insomnia! The uptight, snobby, (redacted).

One year ago tomorrow (trying to stay ahead of the curve) I fired up my little corner of the internetz. 90 posts (counting this one), almost 4,000 views (half of 'em mine), 101 comments (also about half mine). In that time I added 4 new guns to the armory, lost a close family member, had some stumbles of my own and generally lived my boring ol' life as well as time, money, and various 'n' sundry other things allowed.

I figured on one post a week when I got going but this happened to be a good year for fodder. What with a moron in the White House and about 99.9999999999% of Congress added to that, they were bound to shake a few words out of me. This is also not counting the random stupid/funny/etc. that you can run across when you have a lot of free time to peruse the web and have other more able bloggers to find what you miss and link it for your approval/derision or just fill you in on what's happening in their lives. I'm not a good writer as you can see, so getting me to commit felonious acts of literacy is a painfully slow process. I will try to do better next year, but no promises.

Here's looking forward to another 365 days with you crazy folks. I made a lot of new friends this year and I hope to add to that in the next 12 months.

1: AMMO - Lots and Lots of ammo.

2: If goblin/creature/whatever, took 20 rounds of 147gr 9mm JHP's and didn't even blink, then the old double barrel 12 gauge loaded with birdshot you brought along isn't going to help.

3: Use a weapon that has a history of making a mess. I recommend the M2 HB, cause .50 BMG rounds took apart Nazi and Japanese aircraft in WW2, they'll do wonders on Mr. Undead as well.

4: Never assume Mr. Undead is really dead, burn him after you tear him apart.

5: After burning, hammering the remaining bones into dust with a 10lb sledgehammer isn't really overkill, it's insurance and a damn good workout.

5A: Overkill is a good thing.

6: After finishing off previous task, don't worry about washing up because he does have friends.

7: When in a group, never be the first one through the door. That said, never be the last either.

8: If you are alone, don't just walk through the house like a dork, use your environment. Lead with a piece of wood, better splinters in your hand than losing the hand altogether.

9: Whenever it is prudent, RUN and don't look back because the murderous-flying-zombie-vampire-werewolves ARE gaining on you.

10: Get to a location that is solid and defensible from all angles, and if you are unsure about a location. IT IS VULNERABLE.

11: AMMO - Lots and Lots of ammo.

I.E. let him buy an SKS for me since at the time you could get one here for about $80. I opted to buy my own rifle, cause I'm contrary like that. I wanted one just like the ones He, Dad and Mom use. The ubiquitous Marlin .30-30. So the hunt began, so to speak, and I started looking at all the various antique-collector shows and auctions that we went to to see if I could find one. About 6 months later I was sitting at home watching TV when Mom called and said she and Dad had found one I might like at the antique show they were set up at. I gave her the nod and she drove back out to the house to pick me up and off I went. About 20 minutes later I was looking at this beautiful little rifle and a bit of haggling later I picked it up for the above mentioned $150 (not real sure Mom and Dad hadn't been haggling before I got there) but either way I was lighter in the bank account but physically 7 lbs heavier. I haven't looked back since. I have a lot of guns that can take medium sized game (here in MO I can legally hunt deer with any single-projectile, centerfire cartridge) but this is always gonna be the first gun I ever bought myself. As they say, firearms are forever. Well, so are the memories, every scuff, scratch and ding in the finish tells a story and ya know...I'm happy with that.

The one handgun that I have put several thousand rounds thru over the years starting when I was about 16.

Harrington & Richardson Arms Co. .22 Special. 9-shot, double-action / single-action revolver.

Best I've been able to come up with is that this model was last produced in 1943, and this one was from around 1941-42. Shoots well but has a strong yet smooth double action, the single action is crisp and clean with no movement that I can feel. And lets face it, 9-shots of .22 LR, HV hollow point is more than most people want to buck, especially considering that Mom is a crack-shot.

I do remember. Nine years ago today I was laying on the couch watching TV on my day off, when the news came on that the World Trade Center was on fire. I heard the first reports that a plane had struck the building. I remember thinking at first that someone had seriously screwed up their calculations with regards to altitude and location and I wondered how someone could make such a huge error. Then the next reports chilled me to the bone and pissed me off...a second plane had struck the other tower. Further reports told of the Pentagon and I knew at that point it was no mere accident, it was an act of war. The next thought that ran through my mind was of all those young men I had met the year before, just before I was discharged from the Army. They would be among the first called upon to avenge this act, all that would be needed is a name and a place. All they needed was to know who they would have to kill or capture and they would go, most of them enthusiastically.

As more reports came in throughout the day everyone was scrambling to figure out who was behind this, some of us already had our suspicions, the same ones responsible in '93. No matter what anyone wants to believe the list of groups capable and willing to do something like this is very short, then and now. You can call it profiling if you want but the one thing I learned during my short time in the Army is that you must learn everything you can about your enemy, (armored units still study the tactics of Rommel in North Africa). Muslim extremists have proven before they care nothing for anyone, not even themselves as long as they can kill innocent people, for what? to prove a point? I'm sorry but that isn't the way you prove a point. You want to fight? Then do so, face to face, man to man, as it should be. Although that would be expecting too much from a group of cowards that wouldn't stand a chance against some of our children, let alone the most deadly fighting forces on the planet.

For those that are about my age, we were just kids during the first attack, we were not expected to learn all we could about it and why it happened. I did some digging on my own, even at 12 years old you can learn a lot if you dig in the right spots and I understood then as I did nine years ago and still do now. This is an enemy that wants us all dead by any means available. Trying to appease them will only get you dead quicker, yet our leaders seem to think that if you apologize enough the problem will go away. It won't. Terrorism is a disease and the only cure is to wipe it from the face of the Earth at the point of a sword, or a bullet, whichever we happen to have available at the time.

Well desktop is still f***ed. Running my Mom's laptop at the moment (Thanks Mom) so I at least have interwebz and emailz. Though the lack of games is going to be interesting, thank G-d I bought the PS3 last year or I'd be going insane right about now. But. It (the laptop) can't run the PC games I have (at least not well), or the ones that are due to be released that I've been waiting for. GRRRRRR.

Oh well getting money saved takes time and I can make due till then or till I can figure what part of my other one took the poison pill. Or until I put a 230gr. slug through its processor and put it out of MY misery, whichever happens first.

If any of you use optics on your firearms or even iron sights that aren't quite tuned at the factory then you already know the problems associated with getting them zeroed. The main problem isn't so much getting the sights lined up as it is getting them close enough to get the shots on paper where you can start adjusting. Well I always had this problem too, that's why about 6 or 7 years ago I bought the Laserlyte laser boresight and having just replaced the batteries for the first time, I thought I'd offer this review. IT F*&^#@G ROCKS, HARD!!! Using this on the .30-06 you see in the header above at 100yds I just put the crosshairs on the dot and went from there, that is exactly where the bullets went when I shot my group.

So if you are having difficulty getting your shots on paper to get your sighting system of choice lined up, get one. It's the best 40 bucks you'll spend. Not to mention the savings in ammo for more fun things, like putting holes in paper or fur-bearing critters, whichever floats your boat. Much love Laserlyte, thanks for making such great products.

Well I know I haven't posted in awhile and that's due to me picking up Red Dead Redemption for PS3. If you have a 360 or PS3, I recommend it, it's Grand Theft Auto on horseback. But. There are a lot more things to do on the side than the regular GTA games I think. For instance: hunting, gathering herbs, breaking wild horses, bounty hunting, treasure hunting or just plain ol' heading into a nest of enemies and cleaning house. Red Dead Redemption gets the JRebel seal of approval.

I've often bragged on GBC about being able to step outside anytime I want and pop off a few rounds. Here's why:

From where I was standing with the camera, (if you click to bigify the pic,) you can see the khaki colored target stand, that's 25 yds +/- a yard. Way in the background you can see a small pair of ceders, from the wood frame attached to the oak to them is 100 yds. If I shoot through the area I'm standing from the corner of my driveway all the way to the back fence, (behind the ceders,) is 200 yds. Impossible to do in the spring and summer until the grass is cut.

Yet there was still someone getting full-on PSH over it.

Well I'd say it was a damned good thing that the victim had a gun. It just means there's one less little punk running around trying to add his own tally to the crime rate.

Well I just finished cleaning my late Grandpa's old .22. It still functioned flawlessly but here's the kicker, it had 40+ years worth of residue built up in the action. I was sweeping chunks of that stuff out of the action and off the working bits (was waiting for Jimmy Hoffa to come rolling out,) yet the dang thing still shot better than a lot of newer .22 LR's I've seen and I'd like to see a lot of newer rifles function at all with that much crud in them.

It's not special in any way other than it was Grandpa's rifle. Other than that it's just an old Western Auto Supply Revelation 120 made by Marlin, more or less the same in action to the model 60 but externally it looks a lot like the old model 99's.

But...time for a memory.

I do have a bit of a statement to make though to start. Any person who thinks you can't kill a turkey with a .22LR from over 200 yds away with iron sights, all I have to say is "you're a liar" and you can quote me on that. I know cause I was standing next to Grandpa when he shot it and I'm the one that walked across the field to retrieve it, 2 shots 2 lethal hits, one through the neck and one through the head, with this very rifle. Granted he had a lot of practice hitting what he was aiming at, that's the way he grew up. You went out with so many rounds of ammo and you either came back with that much game or the difference in game and ammo, you didn't waste bullets plain and simple and if you missed, well, the extra chores would teach ya not to.

UPDATE: After talking with my dad I found out exactly how old this rifle is. Grandpa bought it new from Western Auto when dad was about 5 so it's about 50 years old now and Grandpa paid the sum total of about $30 for it, that's gonna be another family heirloom just like the old single-shot 12ga.
